According to a University of Otago, Christchurch research, there is a connection between mental sickness and economic security.

The study found that those, who suffer from mental illnesses during the age of 18 and 25, have lesser chances to get a full-time job, by the time they turn 30. These people were also less likely to enjoy good salaries and are probably not able to afford a good standard of living.

The research came out in the August edition of the British Journal of Psychiatry.

The study entailed 950 people, who were posed questions like, whether they have experienced symptoms of psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorder, phobias, and drug or alcohol abuse.

It was learnt that mental illnesses were prevalent in 50.1% participants. These people suffered from at least one psychiatric disorder during their early adulthood.

The investigators also found that 54.5% had witnessed two or more than two bouts of mental sickness. The participants were also inquired about their job, level of income, and educational qualifications.

Lead Researcher Dr. Sheree Gibb said, "Our study also showed that those people most at risk of negative outcomes are not those who experience any specific type of psychiatric disorder, but rather those people who experience more than one episode or period of illness”.
