The ‘on the rise’ category of proposed luxury plug-in gas-electric hybrids has yet another addition – Cadillac’s concept Converj! The car’s low, sporty looking 2+2 coupe design is equipped with a 16 kilowatt-hour battery and a 40-mile all-electric range, like the Volt.
The technology behind the powertrain for the Converj and the forthcoming production Volt has been given brand name ‘Voltec’ by GM. This power train, giving 273 pound-feet of torque and a top speed of 100 mph, uses an electric motor to drive the wheels.
A t-shaped lithium ion battery packed in the chassis of the car gives it the power. Working as a range extender is a small gas engine, which supplies additional electricity when the car is driven beyond its electric range of 40 miles.
A production Converj would likely have two doors, reduced wheel size, a lifted roofline, and less of high-tech gear.
There are some elements that Converj has got, but are lacking in the Volt, like - an adaptive magnetic suspension to keep the car flat in hard cornering; and twenty-one-inch wheels holding up the front, with twenty-two-inch wheels supporting the back.
The interior of the car would boast of the eco-theme – what with renewable stuff like wool in the floor mats, a silk headliner, and post-industrial waste suede on the seats!
