China Unicom Ltd. To Launch Wi-Fi Version of Apple’s iPhone

Last year in October, the China Unicom Ltd. offered the sale of Apple’s iPhone. It is the only Company in China, which is selling iPhones’ units.

On Friday, the Company declared that the smartphone will be available with Wi-Fi system from Monday onwards, on eight-gigabyte version of the iPhone’s 3GS model.

The existing handsets of the phone in market don’t offer this service due to some regulations by the country, which do not want the wireless products to affect the revenues of state-owned telecom firms. But, as the black marketing of the iPhone started in China, Unicom urged the Government to sanction their demand.

The Company got the license to sell Wi-Fi embedded iPhone in July. The price has not been altered; thus, the model without Wi-Fi and with it will be sold for 4,999 Yuan (738 dollars) only. There is another alternative to use Wi-Fi on existing handsets by getting a monthly package of at least 226 Yuan.

Unicom told that they are negotiating with Apple to launch iPad tablet in China. Apple’s iPhone 4 would also be coming later this year, as told by the Company.

China’s market for mobile phones comprises around 805 million users. The Wi-Fi version of iPhone is surely going to give tough competition to the other smartphones in China.
