In Saskatoon, Canada, the average salary of a registered nurse is around $250,000, which is considered too high.
Barbara Cape, the President of the Service Employees International Union-West (SEIU) states that the reason for such high pay packages is the continued shortage of health care workers in the country.
When people hear that nurses are offered such hefty salaries, they start knitting their brows, but the reality is that there is an acute shortage of care workers, which is quite alarming. In order to sustain the present number of health care workers, the hospitals are left with no other choice than paying high salaries to them.
The basic salary of many nurses is in the range of $63,569 to $84,168. Nurses who are in senior positions get a base salary of around $88,000.
Working extra hours in addition to the normal working time allow the nurses to earn more than $200,000.
Normally, the base pay of licensed nurses is 75 to 80% of the base wage of RNs, but Saskatchewan has been exceptional in this case.
Cape mentions that the current situation is quite unfortunate as LPNs are highly qualified and are not being properly utilized according to their qualifications.
The President of Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Health-Care Council, Gordon Campbell has also brought up the issue of LPNs’ full utilization in the country.
