1000 of Birds Succumb to Newcastle Disease

On Friday, the Ministry of Environment stated that around 1,000 of double-crested cormorants and gulls have found dead in the Meadow Lake Provincial Park and Jackfish Lake areas, which has been doubted to be caused by the eruption of Newcastle disease.

There are many other birds, which have been discovered in the ill-health state. The reports related to the dead birds came out in the early August and the revealed data is till August 12.

The birds succumbed to the Newcastle disease virus, as discovered in the tests performed. Further examinations are being carried out to detect the presence of the Newcastle disease virus in the region, which has raised the skepticism.

Yeen Ten Hwang, Chief Ecologist for the Ministry of Environment's Fish and Wildlife branch told that the Newcastle disease has its evidences in the Canadian prairies since the 1990s and it spreads naturally among the birds. She further added that there are number of cormorants in the area and with the death of 1000 of them, there population is not going to get affected.

She said, “And we are looking at perhaps 1,000 out of tens of thousands of birds. So in fact, in context, it's only affecting a small population of the cormorants and gulls".

Although, there is no threat to the humans, but they have been advised not to touch any dead bird, as told by the officials of the province.
