Yvonne Jones, the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Leader called in for a press conference at Confederation Building almost immediately after 2:30 pm, only to inform that she would be away from her office between now and the end parts of this year.
To take in her duties for the time she would be away, Kelvin Parsons will be the one in office and her Executive Assistant, Bonnie Hicks will tackle her constituency work.
Jones Frankly spoke in regards to her diagnoses and said that her family was with her in her decision.
Leader of the provincial NDP, Lorraine Michael: Liberal party President, Judy Morrow and Prime Minister, Danny Williams have all expressed that they were going to support Jones in all ways and that their best wishes were with her.
Yvonne Jones informed that she is scheduled to go through breast cancer surgery on Monday.
She is 42 years old and it was in the month of July that she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Jones said that for Friday, she would be in the office and lead the party, but Kelvin Parsons would be the party’s provisional leader while she is undergoing treatment.
Premier, Danny Williams, in a statement said that hearing about Ms. Jones’ diagnosis was saddening news to hear.
