New Power7 Systems in the Inventory of IBM for the Year Ahead

New Power7 systems will be launched by IBM that would incorporate high-end systems such as Power 795 system and four entry-level Power7 processor-based servers. They have been framed especially for the clients of mid-market. It would also come with Smart Analytics System embedded with Power7 and IBM Rational. This is what lies in the inventory of IBM, for the year ahead.

The announcement on August 17 regarding the high-end products was made by Jeff Howard, Director of Power Systems Marketing at IBM, in an interview with eWEEK.

Howard said, “The new systems are designed to manage demanding workloads and emerging applications. And the new high-end system offers better energy efficiency than competitive systems from Oracle and HP”.

The new system contains up to 8 terabytes of memory and is four times more efficient in energy than the fastest Power 595. It also holds four times as many processor cores as the previous systems. It employs IBM’s latest PowerVM virtualization software that facilitates customers to run more than 1,000 virtual servers on a single physical system.

Apart from the high-end system, IBM would also come with Power Flex, integrated with more than two Power 795 systems, PowerVM Live Partition Mobility and a Flex Capacity Upgrade that would assist clients in switching running applications from one system to another. Also, the Company announced to launch AIX 7, a new version of IBM’s UNIX operating system that could also run on an older AIX 5.2

The New Power7 systems would be sold through IBM and IBM Business Partners. Its starting price is $6,385.
