A British medical expert is reported to have claimed that Muslims are found to show the greatest amount of inhibition, when it comes to donating organ, compared to other religions.
The main reason for their reluctance is that they do not know whether donating organ is allowed within their faith or not, the expert told delegates in an international transplantation conference in Vancouver, on Tuesday.
An international survey was conducted recently by Dr. Adnan Sharif, a Muslim kidney specialist to discern that why Muslims always show inhibition for donating organs, despite being keen to accept a transplant.
The study's findings claimed that nearly 75% of the 891 participants, who were surveyed, reported no problem in being a recipient of an organ if needed; with a mere 10.6% of the respondents claiming to become an organ donor.
Over 33% bear a belief that donating organs is against Islam. However, for the others, the two main reasons supporting their inhibition is their interpretation of the Koran and the advice that they have got from their spiritual leaders at their local mosques, explained Sharif.
"Muslims have this argument, this belief, that organ donation is a sin even though most scholars say it's okay, and in fact welcome, because of the belief that to save one life is to save all humanity", he quoted.
