As reported, the previous year, around 400 teenagers from all over the country accessed to NHS Worcestershire's free Stop Smoking Services. The figure does not include adolescents aging 12 and below, as firstly, they had to consult their GPs.
“It was crucial the service did everything it could to encourage young people who had started smoking to try and stop and to provide them with expert NHS stop smoking services and support”, said Julia North, the Stop Smoking Services' Health Improvement Specialist Co-coordinator.
She further added that they are making efforts to curb the import of cheap cigarettes and to restrict young people under the age of 18 from illegal smoking. The consumption of cigarette leads to addiction to smoking that inflicts adverse affects to health.
As the figures revealed, more than 80% of the smokers get addicted to smoking before the age of 19 and around 50% of them, who becomes long-term smokers succumb to cancer or other such lethal diseases. The young people, who get addicted to smoking at an early age, are more likely to get affected by deadly diseases like lung cancer or heart disease. The menace is twice as threatening in young smokers of age 16 and below, as compared to those, who start smoking later in life.
