On Thursday, a German court took punitive actions against 28-year-old pop singer Nadja Benaissa. The court said that the singer had unsafe sex with her former boyfriend and knowingly transferred the HIV virus into the boy.
Nadja was given a 2-year suspended sentence. The court mentioned that she could have been given a 10-year imprisonment, but the prosecutor was soft in the judgment as the singer had owned up to what she had done.
At the end of the trial, Benaissa said that it was the biggest mistake of her life. She also added that she hid the fact from everyone as she was afraid of what would happen to her career when the whole world would know that she was suffering from the deadly disease.
She said, “I was a coward. I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart. I wish I could turn back the clock and make it all not happen”.
Nadja was born in Frankfurt. Her mother is a German and her father is a Moroccan. In 2000, Benaissa along with four other people formed a German band called No Angels.
Benaissa was arrested in April last year for the charges and was sent to jail for 10 days.
Oliver Wallasch, Benaissa's lawyer, said that because of the trial she is feeling too dejected, but at the same time she respects the court’s order and will abide by its decision.
