No Refuges to be Build Without National Standard, Says Brumby

Last month, the Bushfire Royal Commission released its final report on annihilating bushfires. The report had 67 proposed policy amendments.

The Victorian Government agreed on 59 recommendations. The Government also agreed to support seven out of the eight remaining policies.

The only policy recommendation that has been rejected by the Government is voluntary property buy-back scheme for inhabitants who live in high-risk regions.

As per the State Government, such a rule will augment the risk for the remainder of the residents.

The State Government has also decided to get rid of the fire service taxes and will replace it with a broader base tax. It has also decided to increase the manpower by recruiting 612 firefighters.

On Friday, the Government decided to provide an additional $11.5 million to bring out neighborhood safer places (NSPs).

According to Premier John Brumby, as many as 100 NSPs have been approved, which will be used as the last choice and 100 more NSPs are in the pipeline.

He also told the reporters that at present there are no specifications to build a refuge in Australia and from now on no more refuges would be built without the national standard.

Around $900 million amount will be spent by the Government in order to carry out the recommended policies.
