United-Continental merger backed by US Department of Justice

A merger deal in between the United Airlines and Continental Airlines to create the largest carrier of the world has been backed and supported by the US Justice Department.  The new combined group will use the current colors of Continental Airlines with the name of United Airlines. Both of the airlines have agreed to provide some slots to the low fare carrier at the Newark airport hub to end the anti-competition probe.

Both of the airlines were expecting the merger deal as the companies were making loss at that time and they are very happy with the deal as the merger deal worth 3.2 billion dollars will allow them a saving of at least 1 billion dollars per year.

The United and Continental airlines currently fly to and from 370 places together carrying 144 million passengers in a year. The combination of both companies will create the largest airline of the world based on the total number of passengers and flying distance.

The boss of the Continental Airlines, Jeff Smisek will be the chief executive for the new combined company based in Chicago. This merger deal is still to be approved by the shareholders of both companies.
