Medical Professionals do not Seek Help for Mental Illnesses

Beyond Blue has launched a new program to deal with the mental health problems among doctors and medical students.

According to a study by Beyond Blue, suicide rates in doctors are on the rise and women doctors are mainly vulnerable.

The main reasons for the increasing rate of suicide cases are depression and anxiety. Moreover, the doctors are ignoring these problems and are unwilling to get the treatment done.

Dr. Mukesh Haikerwal, the ex-President of the Australian Medical Association says that it is very essential that doctors should be treated in the same manner as a normal person suffering from such problems.

He also said that members of the medical community should not feel defeated and it is OK to seek help from other medical experts.

Jeff Kennett, the Chairman of Beyond Blue said that it is imperative for the doctors to remain healthy before treating their patients.

Mr. Kennett also expressed his concern over the extended working hours of doctors, who work round the clock and as a result become ill, which in turn affects their professional life.

He further added, “We need to have a fit medical profession and we're a long way from doing that”.
