Marjorie Jackson-Nelson, a former South Australian Governor, who had founded the Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fellowship Fund in the year 1977, has decided to move on and has handed over the reins of the charity organization to the Cancer Council.
The charity organization was founded in the memory of her late husband, an Olympic cyclist, who succumbed to death due to the dreadful condition of leukemia.
Ms. Marjorie, also known as Lithgow Flash has to her account as many as 10 world records and two Olympic gold medals. She has worked tirelessly for 30 years to raise funds for the cause. Her efforts have been fruitful as the charity till date has raised money in excess of $6 million.
Confirming the news, Ms. Jackson-Nelson said, "For 33 years we've been coming every week and raising money so it's time for most of us now to step down and let a bigger organisation take over and they will, the Cancer Council will be running it for me”.
She added that she was extremely proud of the fund and she also said that due to the humongous amounts that have been raised, nine researches have been put in place in as many as nine hospitals.
Appreciating the efforts of Ms. Jackson-Nelson, Professor Wilson from the Cancer Council SA said that the organization would work with the same zeal and annihilate the dreadful cancer at the earliest.
