‘Going the Distance’ is a light romantic comedy wherein two smart and funny, yet sweet people try to have a cross-country relationship. The movie has a 1980-ish flavor with a hint of the shrewd innocence of that era.
The plot revolves around Erin (Drew Barrymore), 31, is completing her internship at The New York Sentinel, and wants desperately to get a job there.
Meanwhile, Garrett (Justin Long), is an easy-come-easy-go womanizer who works for a medium-size New York record label. The two first meet at a quiet, homey bar, and what follows is a rare romantic journey.
The movie features love montages of the 80’s like ''Take My Breath Away,'' ''Just Like Heaven'' and the Pretenders' ''Don't Get Me Wrong''. The director of the movie Nanette Burstein has directed a lot of documentaries including American Teen and co-directed The Kid Stays in the Picture. With ‘Going the Distance’, she makes a major shift to mainstream Hollywood comedy.
The script has been written by Geoff LaTulippe. Burstein has filled the movie with a lot of humane obscenity, which are delightfully pulled off by Barrymore. "Going the Distance", though a minor movie, will leave the feeling that whatever is shown is actually believable.
