Fish, a New Meal in the Diet of Diabetic Patients

A recent study revealed that taking fish can lower the chance of getting affected with diabetes and also claimed to discover the functioning of the fish oil in the body that checks certain conditions and prevents diabetes and heart disease.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. They discovered the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil such as sardines and mackerel, which can cut the risk of having chronic disorders such as Type-2 diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.

“Our work shows how fish oils safely do this, and suggests a possible way to treat the serious problems of inflammation in obesity and in conditions like diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases”, said Professor Jerrold Olefsky, the lead researcher.

Along with the said benefits, omega-3 fatty acids that are commonly found in obese people can also check inflammation. They worked on the receptors of macrophages that aggravate the conditions of inflammation.

The researchers carried out the study on mice to examine the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on specific white cells known as macrophages that release a protein leading to inflammation by absorbing debris and harmful molecules.

It was found that omega-3 acids got attached to the receptor known as GPR120 on macrophage cells and turned it on, thus checking the inflammation. The protein keeps the receptor off, which brings inflammation effects.
