A weight loss surgeon from Gold Coast, Australia has been asked to retire from medical practice after he was found guilty of medical negligence, following an investigation into the loss of life of two patients, who had been operated upon by the surgeon, Michael Russell Broadbent, 67.
Medical Practitioners Tribunal, stated that Broadbent be penalized for the negligence committed by the surgeon on the two patients who had undergone the weight loss surgery. Though, the cost of the penalty has not been asserted yet.
Judge Clive Wall, who handed down the judgment to Broadbent, further stated that he may never re-apply for registration of medical practice in Australia again.
The two unlucky patients who had to pay with their lives for a weight loss surgery were, Margaret Pearce, who died in year 2000 and Ursula MacLeod, who died in 2003. Both the patients died due to complications after the surgery, which is known as radical weight loss surgery. Both the women were in their 50’s.
Late Margaret Pearce’s daughter, Georgina Bandeira said that she was pleased with the verdict handed out by the judge and it was what they wanted.
To add to the woes of the infamous surgeon, there are currently 12 other patients who underwent a surgery called biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) surgery performed by him, who are up in arms against the surgeon for suffering brain damage, infections and malnutrition; a civil action is already under proceedings.
