Why to Have 2 Pilots in a Plane, Asks Ryanair CEO

Michael O’Leary, CEO, Ryanair, in what could be one of the most preposterous statements he has yet made, stated that 'Why does every plane have two pilots? Really, you only need one pilot.’

When he was quizzed on how would the plane land if the lone Pilot suffers an injury or a stroke, while in flight? Mr. O’Leary answered that in case the Pilot suffers a heart attack or in case of some other crisis, an air stewardess could be trained to land the plane.

Mr. O’Leary who had earlier brought up the idea of airplanes introducing standing-only passengers has never been short of controversies or making some very objectionable yet amusing statements.

The ridiculous idea met with an immediate rubbishing by pilots. According to Patrick Smith, a long-serving pilot, Mr. O’Leary’s statement was not just preposterous but way beyond that. He further added that it was important to have a second person in the cabin, even during operations which were a part of routine.

It seems that Mr. O’Leary seems to enjoy being in the whale of controversies, who had even suggested charging customers for the use of washrooms in flight.

Mr. O’Leary did put one of his unpopular, ingenious ideas to use by charging flyers a baggage charge this summer holiday.
