Ethnic Health Specialist Says ‘Diabetes Tsunami’ Set to Strike

An ethnic health specialist is of the say that Asians flooded with ‘diabetes tsunami’ is soon going to hit Canterbury health system, since it is not prepared to tackle the wave yet.

The global diabetes hub is in China, where one in 10 individuals is suffering from the disease, as per the most recent report found in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Partnership Health Canterbury ethnic liaison Manager, Wayne Reid gave his stance that Asians had the second uppermost rate of being diagnosed with the disease in New Zealand that is after Pacific Islanders.

He said that discrimination shown against them in the health system only meant that they were not getting an apt access to the healthcare or were not diagnosed for the problem.

As per the information provided by him, almost 6.5% Asians suffered from diabetes however a mere 1.8% Asians in Canterbury underwent a free annual check-up for diabetes.

It is assumed that the maximum count of non-diagnosed individuals would belong to Asia if compared with the other entire ethnic groups, since they would likely be the ones, who would least opt at seeking professional help to get diagnosed, over the previous year.

Since the Asian populace in Canterbury, NZ is increasing rapidly, it is expected that by 2016 the population would almost double.
