The latest reports confirm that the Provincial Government is all set to recommence the kidney transplants in Saskatchewan.
In the year 2009, the Saskatoon-based transplant program was discontinued as shortage of specialists was witnessed. The same happened since one of the vascular surgeons, due to health reasons, put in his papers. Further, the deadlock between the talks of the Government and the surgeons pertaining to their salaries and amount of work, added to the abeyance of the program.
Overcoming the causes, Health Minister Don McMorris announced on Friday that Saskatchewan's kidney transplant program would be resumed, though in a partial manner.
Reports claim that due to the shortage of the surgeons, the program is being recommended only for the living donors.
McMorris further added, "We need to recruit a couple of transplant specialists. Once that is done ... we will hopefully be resuming the cadaveric portion of the program so both portions can be done here in Saskatchewan".
On receiving the news, the kidney patients were in a mood of celebration. The patients and their family members claim that with this development, now they would be able to get the transplant without waiting or travelling for long.
Further, with this decision of the Government, all the political debates revolving around the issue would come to rest, at least for the time being.
