Just One Dose of Spiroindolone NITD609 Will Treat Malaria

According to the scientists at U. S. National Institutes of Health, now it will be possible to treat malaria by using just a single dose of a new drug, which is currently under an experimental phase.

Researchers have come up with a new drug called spiroindolone NITD609, which has the ability to deal with two most prevalent parasites, Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, responsible for malaria.

Scientists say that NITD609 medicine has some unique properties, which will facilitate the manufacturing of the drug in the form of tablets. It would also be possible to produce the anti-malarial drug in a large number.

Scientists are hopeful that NITD609 will soon be used for Phase I human trials, if the proper implementation of pharmacological and safety regulations are done.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), every year, as many as 247 million human cases of malaria are reported across the world. Out of 247, around one million die because of this deadly disease.

Most cases are found among children in Africa, which is an underdeveloped country and is reeling under poverty. It is said that in every 45 seconds, a child loses his/her life because of malaria.

Malaria also causes hindrance in the growth of a nation’s economy.
