A study of breast cancer in women has outlined that ACT accounts for the highest prevalence of the malignant disease in the nation.
The research conducted by the Breast Cancer Treatment Group, involved over 3,000 patients from Canberra and south-east New South Wales. The participants were tracked for a period of ten years from 1997 to 2007.
ACT attributes to highest incidence rates of breast cancer in Australian women. The nation witnesses over 200 new cases of breast cancer in women and one new case in men, every year.
However, a positive claim is that the rates of survival for these cases are high.
The research has outlined that more than 80% of the patients were found to have survived with no traces of the disease. Also, a further 3.4% were alive with a recurrence of cancer infection and over 7.3% had succumbed to death because of the disease.
"The data set used within the report is unique within Australia and allows us to see the relationship between health outcomes and treatment”, Health Minister Katy Gallagher posted. He said, "Due to ongoing comprehensive data collection, this project will continue to provide significant information on long-term patient outcomes in the ACT And the surrounding NSW region".
