The dystopian drama "Never Let Me Go" directed by Mark Romanek released this year. As luck has it, Romanek’s last 3 movies crashed at the box office back to back. This made him think twice about the kind of movies he was making.
So finally, he took a cultural turn, and directed "Never Let Me Go". It is based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel "Never Let Me Go". The script is by Garland, an old friend of Ishiguro's.
The production is by Fox Searchlight. Promising to be a ‘different’ movie, "Never Let Me Go" premiered at this weekend's Telluride Film Festival. It will release in theatres on 15th September.
The movie is highly provocative and unsettling. It has a good chance of contending for any number of categories for an awards function.
In a way that is not very obvious, in "Never Let Me Go" is falling apart from everywhere. Every authentic detail, every small bit seems to be giving a subtle message that time is running out and the characters in the film are helpless. It is essentially a science fiction film, but unconventionally so. Romanek wanted to make it relatable rather than fantastical.
