According to a recent report, 40% of the children in the New York City are obese. The study that is said to be the biggest of its kind entailed kids from kindergarten through eighth grade.
It discovered that almost half of the youngsters in the state were overweight. The number amounted to over 250,000 children. The figures shocked a number of people in the community, posing questions on the subject of physical education in the city.
The study by the city’s departments of health and education was founded on Fitnessgram estimations.
Another development that came to surface was that the obesity levels were reliant on locality. So while some of the national groups witnessed a greater level of obesity, there were other communities where obesity levels were not that high.
In the West side zip code of 10069, it was seen that less than 12% of kids were obese or overweight, whereas in 11368, it was 51%. Officers said that the number is certainly disheartening, but it wasn’t shocking.
They said that neighborhoods, which find it difficult to make both ends meet, are the ones who are more prone to being overweight. Meanwhile, the data may drive the City to implement measures regarding physical education and the lunch systems in schools, to tackle this problem which might have long-lasting effects.
