Farmers Told to Cull Badgers in Order to Prevent Bovine Tuberculosis
Caroline Spelman

Caroline Spelman, who is the Environment Secretary, has ordered the farmers to kill the badgers in their field in order to control their population. The badgers have affected the areas by spreading bovine tuberculosis.

Those farmers who can give a proof that their fields require the controlling of the badgers will be given the license to kill and at the same time they will be responsible for vaccinating the animals present within the area of at least 50 square miles.

One of the officials of the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said that despite stern protest by the people culling process will continue.

Spelman said that the disease is rapidly spreading in other parts also and is a threat to domestic animals.

In 2009, as many as 25,000 cattle were killed because of bTB and the yearly cost to the taxpayer has gone beyond £100 million.

David Cameron, who is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is also supporting the ‘targeted culling’, which will be mainly carried out to protect the other animals.

He further said that his Government will follow the footsteps of Welsh Assembly for killing the badgers.

Scientists have different viewpoint regarding the effectiveness of a cull. Sir David King, who is the ex Chief Scientist, thinks that at present this is the best option available to prevent the badger population to increase further.
