According to the August statistics released by market research firm Quantcast, even though Apple boasts nearly double the amount of traffic in the US as the Android platform, the Google operating system has steadily been growing since November last year.
As per the Quantcast’s August data, while the share of the operating system market-leader Apple was 56 percent; the share of Android OS was 25 percent. However, though the figures confirm Apple’s lead, the fact is that Apple iOS’ share has tumbled from its October 2009 peak of 68 percent; while Android share has grown from nearly 10 percent in November 2009 to 25 percent.
The Quantcast statistics also revealed that Android commenced the year 2010 with 18.6 percent smartphone OS market share; and managed to grab share from others – taking 11.4 percent share from the Apple iOS; 1.6 percent from the RIM Blackberry; and 5.7 percent share from all other OS providers, including Microsoft Windows Mobile and the Palm WebOS.
The Android momentum largely results from the OS’ popularity on some impressive smartphones like Verizon’s Motorola Droid; Droid X; Droid 2; and HTC Droid Incredible.
About the number of Android-based smartphone units sold, Samsung has revealed that it has sold over 1 million Galaxy S Android handsets on the AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile networks; and hopes to sell nearly 25 million handsets in the third quarter this year.
