Men Go Through Post-Natal Depression Too

A study, published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, revealed that men also go through post-natal depression.

The reasons might not be the same as in case of women, but men actually experience depression after having the baby. The study attributed the depression to the fact that men feel weighed down by the responsibility, and that they, after a while, become sleep deprived. However, the main reason remains the men's inability to maintain the same level of romance with their partners.

The study was associated with some figures showing that one in every five fathers goes through depression in the first week after having the baby, whereas 12% of the men sink in periods' depression, at least once, until the child is 12 years old. During the same period, 39% of women experienced depression.

The team, which encompassed researchers from the UK, investigated the medical records of 87,000 couples from across the UK. The selected couples were those who had a baby during the time between the year
1993 and 2007. The study depended on the researchers identifying the number of parents who were diagnosed with depression or got prescriptions for antidepressant medications.

The study was funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC).
