Girlguiding UK released a survey showing that girls are so conscious regarding their looks that they start pushing themselves through severe diets and other activities in order to look attractive.
The survey also showed that the girls sometimes do not like it. According to the 1,200 girls who participated in the survey, the self-obsession with the perfect image emerges from the society’s impression towards a girl, which has to be “attractive”.
All the girls want to be attractive but the girls add that the society feeds this desire, forcing some of the girls to go off the limit. About 47% of the participants voted that the society’s mania toward the physical appearance of the females might be the worst thing regarding being a girl.
In 2009, 42% of girls went through harsh diets and fitness programs, with 75% saying that it would make them more attractive.
Cathy Fraser, Girlguiding UK spokeswoman and Head of the Youth Panel Advocate at Girlguiding UK, commented on the results of the study saying that it is important that the girls would receive the decent support and awareness regarding the relation between their physical appearance and their self-esteem.
She added, "By understanding the issues that girls and young women are facing we can support them to navigate these complex factors and become strong and confident members of society”.
