Diabetes UK: Patients With Diabetes Go Undiagnosed
Diabetes

Diabetes UK, the largest charity in UK supporting diabetes patients and funding researches, published a new study showing that 67,200 people across the region of East Midlands are suffering from Type 2 diabetes or so close form having it, but they just do not seem to notice.

The study added that at the time when these people get a diagnosis, around 50% of them would have developed further complications as blindness, amputation, kidney failure, stroke and heart disease.

The study rings the alarm over the fact that the National Prevention Research Initiative should be working towards boosting its activities of funding more studies and improving the preventative measures against diseases such as diabetes, dementia and strokes.

Although the symptoms in themselves are not alerting, they are evident enough to urge the patient to have a test. Patients aging 40 years old and above, especially those who are overweight, might be at the high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The risk increases in case the patients have any close relatives with diabetes.

Julie Byron, the Regional Manager of Diabetes UK, said, "We urgently need more initiatives in the north-west such as the Diabetes UK Measure Up campaign to raise awareness of the risk factors and symptoms".
