Union Leaders Urge Government to Appoint a Health and Safety 'Tsar'

Following a study which revealed that over 20,000 people died by their work before time, Union leaders urged the Government to appoint a health and security "tsar". The report titled The Case for Health and Safety stated that a lot of office accidents were not being accounted.

The TUC said that its study broke down the "myth" that Britain was one of the best and safest nations for working. It has come to surface that a lot of people are passing away every year because of work-related cancers and lung diseases, traffic accidents and exposure to smoke and chemicals.

According to TUC, nearly 1.2 million people deem that they have some kind of occupational disorder like heart disease, back and shoulder aches, stress or depression.

General Secretary, Brendan Barber said, "Despite the way that health and safety is often pilloried, for those who are made ill or injured at work and for the relatives of those who have died as a result of their work, health and safety is no joke”.

He added that the law rescues the lives of the people and avoids the development of preventable diseases.

The union organization appealed to the Government for the appointment of a health and security tsar, and to pay no heed to the business lobby’s suggestion to decrease legislation.
