Greater Chunk of Healthcare Cost Shifts from Employers to Employees

A new survey has revealed that as greater share of healthcare costs has been shifted to the workers from the business owners, so the workers are required to pay 14% more for their employer-sponsored plans as compared to last year.

In order to pay the cost of family healthcare coverage, this year the employees have paid $3,997, which is $482 more than the average share paid last year.

In 2005, there was a 47% increase in the average employee share of a family. Furthermore, a survey was conducted by the Companies and 30% of them said that last year when they had increased the amount, which their employees must pay for health insurance, they also had reduced the scope of benefit.

The Health Research & Educational Trust and the Kaiser Family Foundation has released this data of a 2010 Employer Health Benefits Survey on Thursday.

"The striking finding is the increase in the employee's share with no increase in the employer's share", said Drew Altman, Kaiser Family Foundation President and CEO in a Thursday call with the reporters.

He has also added that as the economy is struggling, the burden of costs has been shifted to the workers from the employers and this is the reason why workers are required to pay a greater chunk of their healthcare costs.
