A Large Swathe Of Toronto’s West-End Hit By Massive Power Outage

On the coldest night of the year, a flood at a Toronto Hydro facility has left a substantial part of the west-end without any power, closing subway lines and leaving homes and streets in darkness, including from Jane St. to Spadina Ave. and Queen St. to St. Clair Ave. Pockets in the area bordered by Dupont Street to the north, Bathurst Street to the east, Queen Street to the south and High Park/Bloor West Village to the west have all been affected by the power outage.

The flood at a Dufferin St. facility, just north of Bloor St . occurred just before 10:00 p. m., leading to a short-circuit of the power system. Whilst, repair work is going on, it seems it will take all night for the repair crew to restore power to the city.

Police have had to call in extra units to patrol inter-sections, as even the traffic lights are not working. Meanwhile, the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line has been shut-down between Eglinton and Bloor stations due to the power outage, however, shuttle buses remain in service.

With overnight temperatures expected to drop to -20 C, and a wind chill factor making it feel like a frigid -29 C, there is no word when power will be restored.
