According to Bloomberg, a forthcoming OnStar feature upgrade will enable General Motors (GM) to add free services that hook into Facebook to its OnStar subscription service later this month.
The upgrade will bring to the OnStar service – which currently provides directions, accident alerts, vehicle diagnostics and emergency roadside help in over 30 GM vehicles - the always-cool voice-to-text feature that will allow subscribers to use voice commands for updating their Facebook status.
The upgrade will also enable the system to read back the most recent “news feed” messages of the subscribers, via the OnStar Virtual Advisor feature.
According to the information forwarded by OnStar, which is part of GM, voice-activated Facebook updates and voice texting are the two potential additions to the platform. However, OnStar also added that both the offerings are currently in the “experimental phase.”
About the feature update, OnStar said in a statement that it has “always operated on the premise that while the possibilities of technological innovation are endless, the company will not implement a new service simply because it's technically feasible, it has to be the right thing to do for the customer. All of our technologies are rigorously evaluated prior to launch.”
The Bloomberg report also revealed that OnStar may start offering entertainment and information services that link to a user’s smartphone, sans any subscription or fee.
