A lawsuit has been filed against Coca Cola Co by Consumer group Center for Science in Public Interest. The lawsuit challenges the company about its VitaminWater products.
It states that the company had made “deceptive and unsubstantiated claims” about its VitaminWater products.
It has been alleged that the company is misleading the public by marketing its “vitaminwater” drinks as a healthier alternative to sugared sodas. The law suit that also accuses Coke of making deceptive claims about the functional health benefits of the drinks. The company is projecting the drinks to “reduce the risk of chronic disease, promote healthy joints, and support optimal immune function”. Steve Gardner, CSPI’s head of litigation, described VitaminWater as “Coke’s attempt to dress up soda in a physician’s white coat”.
CSPI accused Coca-Cola of immoral marketing tactics by projecting VitaminWater as a healthful alternative to soda. The company is using label with such health buzz words as ‘defense,’ ‘rescue,’ ‘energy’ and ‘endurance.’ Contrary to the claims of Coke, Washington, D. C.-based group argues its nutritionists discovered 33 gram of sugar in VitaminWater. The amount of sugar in the drink could lead to obesity, diabetes and other health problems.
However, Coca-Cola spokesperson Diana Garza Ciarlante has dubbede the suit “ridiculous” and an attempt to increase the readership of CSPI’s increasingly irrelevant newsletter
