Auckland Medical Laboratory Workers Walk off Their Job Today

No less than four hundred medical laboratory workers would be seen boycotting their workplace today in Auckland.

The move will mark the foremost day of strike called by lab workers, demanding improvements in their pay scale.

Another 40 million lab tests are expected to be carried out over the upcoming 15 years and workers are of the say that if the existing condition continues, then the demands will burden them accordingly and the present workers will not be able deal with the difficult level workload.

It is a countrywide problem in Northland and Wellington is also going forward with industrial action.

Later parts of the month will see Middlemore Hospital staff on half day strikes.

The Medical Laboratory Workers Union said that made move of industrial action is an attempt at availing equitable pay scale for the lab scientists, who possess four year degrees.

Bryan Raill, National Secretary said that the amount that is earned is 18% less than what is earned by teachers and nurses, who posses three years degree.

He said that lab workers were quite serious about the industrial action but DHBs have been ousting union associates for almost five days, in order to pressurize and threaten them.
