Brisbane Hospitals on ‘Bypass’; LHMU Asks for Improvement

For the previous two Mondays, all the Brisbane hospitals have been on ‘bypass’ as reported by the union representing ambulance officers. It was informed by the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (LHMU) that there are many patients who are waiting in the back of an ambulance or in the corridors of the hospital for their treatment.

This ‘ramping issue’ has been brought forward so many times by the union from the past 18 years, but there is no respon`se from the State Government, and the situation is rather getting worse now, said LHMU Spokesman John Webb.

Mr. Webb said, “However the last two Mondays, reports coming in from our membership are clearly showing the first thing Monday morning there's just no hospitals to take patients to in the Brisbane area”.

Further, it is anticipated that because of thousands of support workers including cleaners and orderlies, would be taking part in an industrial action, therefore, the elective surgery would face disturbance at the public hospitals, in Western Australia.

More than 8,000 workers will be participating in a protest over a stalled wages claim with WA's Health Department. This campaign is known as work-to-rule campaign and will take action from 6 a. m. (WST), on Monday.

Therefore, LHMU is forcing for a hike in wages by about $50 a week. It also added that the department's pay offer of 8.25% over three years can only fetch the workers $19.
