The Six Year Old Complaint Opens up Again

The conflict between the France- based Airbus SAS and the Chicago-based Boeing and Toulouse is to commence with its first ruling. This confidential ruling over Government subsidies will be taken care of by the World Trade Organization judges.

On September 2004, the European Union had filed a complaint declaring the U.S. aid to Boeing Co. to be illegal. Counter cases had been filed at the WTO.

It had been seen that the Airbus, which is a unit of European Aeronautic, Defense & Space Co. and is the biggest producer of commercial aircraft was experiencing noteworthy profits because of the subsidies for the A380 superjumbo by the European Governments.

While the EU claims that Boeing has reportedly received as much as $23.7 billion in U.S. Defense Department and NASA research subsidies together with the funding it receives from the state and local departments.

All efforts seem to have failed says Peter Mandelson, Britain’s former Business Secretary. Peter was reportedly the Commissioner at the time when the complaints had been filed. It would have been wise if the two Governments had settled the whole thing within themselves rather that filing complaints against each other.

Airbus Spokeswoman Maggie Bergsma said, "Airbus is looking forward to see the European Union case finally moving forward. We expect the WTO to confirm that Boeing received billions of illegal subsidies”.
