FDA tells consumers to exercise caution while consuming peanut butter

After the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials found that peanut butter and peanut paste manufactured in the Georgia’s Blakely plant of Peanut Corp contained the bacteria connected to salmonella outbreak, they have requested consumers to refrain from their consumption.

Although a direct link of the peanut butter to the outbreak of salmonella is yet to be established, the warning by the health officials comes as a precautionary measure. In a teleconference with reporters, Dr. Stephen Sundlof of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety said: “We urge consumers to postpone eating any products that may contain peanut butter until additional information becomes available.”

According to Friday night figures of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak had, in 43 states, sickened 474 people and caused six deaths.

Peanut Corp, acknowledging the presence of a salmonella strain in samples of its products announced an extended recall of the products in question. The company said that none of the peanut butter container – 5 to 1,700 pounds in size - or 35-pound to tanker containers of peanut paste being recalled is sold through retail stores.

The brand-name peanut butters are not likely to be affected by the proceedings, since Peanut Corp. is a bulk supplier; it does not directly supply its products to the supermarkets.

Even though a majority of products - like crackers, cookies, and ice cream - are made with products other than PCA’s, these are better avoided in case of any apprehensions.
