French minister says veil ban won't endanger troops

The ban that has been suggested by France on full face veils in public, according to the French Defence Minister, does not increase the risk to Western troops in Afghanistan.

After the proposition passed the final legislative hurdle on Tuesday, France is on its way to become the first European country to outlaw the 'burqa' after the measure passed its final legislative hurdle on Tuesday.

According to critics, the Muslims will be stigmatized by this step, and this has the potential of sending a negative message about the attitudes of Western countries towards Islamic culture, especially during a sensitive situation in the infamous war in Afghanistan where France has 3,500 troops stationed.

French Defence Minister Herve Morin stated that there could be no further risk or drastic changes due to this step since the risk was already at the highest level. He added that they got no hostile reaction from any Arab capital city.

Those who violate the proposed ban will be fined 150 euros or have to take part in a citizenship class.

France has a Muslim population of 5million, the highest in Western Europe. Many Muslim leaders said that they support neither the veil nor the ban.
