On Friday, Emergent BioSolutions said that it had been able to win an accord valued $186.6 million, which is to develop vaccination, that would help extend the anthrax countermeasures by the Federal Government.
The Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority settled on paying the Rockville firm $51 million for the two years for which it served.
The firm’s BioThrax vaccination is well known and is the only vaccine that has a license by the Food and Drug Administration that prevents anthrax infectivity.
In the month of July, Emergent signed a contract to develop BioThrax for a comprehensive manufacture.
Daniel J. Abdun-Nabi, President and Chief Operating Officer of Emergent said that what the Government has been searching for is added countermeasures since it is somewhat on the risky side to depend upon just one countermeasure.
Technically recognized as the recombinant protective antigen anthrax vaccine, it was developed by the military and its license was offered to a small firm.
Abdun-Nabi, said that two years ago, the firm bought the rights and brought alterations accordingly.
He said that the new contract would offer money for the studies of the vaccination and get ready for approval from the FDA.
