Abbott Laboratories have decided to withdraw Similac brand powdered infant formulas from the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and a few other Caribbean nations.
The recall has been made because it is suspected that the infant formulas are contaminated with small common beetle or larvae. The Company officials said that ready-to-feed liquid formulas and concentrated infant formulas are not involved in the recall.
The Company authorities have said that two consumers have reported about the contamination.
On the other hand, the spokeswoman of the Company, Melissa Brotz is saying that the decision to withdraw the products was taken before the launch of the complaints. She further added that over 99.8% products were found to be ‘negative’ for beetle contamination.
The consumers are requested to visit Similac website to know about the specific lot numbers that are included in recall. They can also clarify their queries by calling at (800) 986-8850, which is the 24-hour consumer hotline service of Abbott. The facility will be available for all the seven days.
As per the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, as such there is no threat of any immediate health risk to infants, but those babies who have consumed the contaminated product may suffer from the symptoms of gastrointestinal infection.
It is advised that the consumers should return the unused portion to the same place, from where they have purchased the contaminated product. They will also get full refund for the product.
