On ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ on Friday, the 26-year-old Facebook CEO, billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, announced a $100-million grant for the improvement of the public school system in Newark, the largest city in New Jersey.
Announcing the donation in the presence of New Jersey’s Republican Governor Chris Christie and Newark’s Democratic Mayor, Cory Booker, Zuckerberg said on the TV show that the grant had been issued by his newly created Startup: Education Foundation.
Talking about his gift to Newark’s careworn public school system, Zuckerberg told Winfrey that he had had a number of opportunities in his life, and had gone to really good schools. He further added that he wanted everyone to have the access to similar opportunities.
Saying that he had no tangible connection with Newark city, Zuckerberg said during a conference call for reporters that his main reason for choosing Newark for the grant was that he had met Mayor Booker at a conference this summer, and was quite impressed by his plans.
Meanwhile, noting that Newark is “in desperate need of transformation,” Governor Christie told reporters: “He (Zuckerberg) is investing in the vision that Cory has. I'm investing in Cory's vision as well. And together Mark and I are going to help Cory make sure we execute and implement that vision to improve the lives of the families in the city of Newark.”
