In a Tuesday announcement, TiVo and Roku revealed their plans of offering their users the access to Hulu’s earlier-this-year-launched premium subscription service, Hulu Plus, from their respective set-top boxes –TiVo’s Premiers DVRs, and Roku’s Internet-connected set-top boxes.
Currently accessible on an invitation-only basis, Hulu Plus, the $9.99 per month subscription service, allows subscribers to stream the episodes of 45 current TV hits; and access classics like “Arrested Development” and “Saturday Night Live,” and several other shows from ABC, NBC, and Fox.
The recent announcement by TiVo and Roku adds the set-top boxes of two companies to a multitude of devices that already boast accessibility to Hulu Plus. These devices are: the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch, as well as Samsung Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players. While a Hulu Plus beta is underway for the PS3; the service will also likely hit the Xbox 360 early next year.
For TiVo and Roku, both of which already boast Netflix availability, Hulu Plus will be added as channels; requiring users to subscribe to Hulu Plus for the content to become accessible by them.
Talking about the expanding availability of Hulu Plus on an increasing number of devices, Pete Distad, Hulu’s VP of content distribution, said in a statement: “We are laser focused on helping people find and enjoy the world's premium video content when, where, and how they want it. Our goal for Hulu Plus is to provide as much consumer choice as possible.”
