List of recalls of peanut butter products growing amid probe

Names of some other companies that have recalled peanut butter have found their way to the FDA's Web site searchable list of recalled products and brands! These include grocers Kroger Co. and Meijer Inc and General Mills Inc who have pulled out items with peanut butter, in the midst of its investigation into a salmonella outbreak.

The recalls by Michigan-based grocer and retailer, Meijer, include two types each of Meijer Brand sandwich crackers and Meijer Brand ice cream, which are sold in its stores and gas stations in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.

General Mills' recalls include two varieties of peanut butter-flavored snack bars, which were sourced from Peanut Corp of America.

In addition to the above grocers, Ralcorp Frozen Bakery Products, Illinois, has recalled peanut butter cookies all Wal-Mart Bakery brands, and Tennessee-based McKee Foods has recalled two types of "Little Debbie" peanut butter sandwich crackers.

Ever since the Food and Drug Administration traced the outbreak of salmonella to Peanut Corporation of America's Georgia plant, the government has warned the consumers to exercise caution while eating cakes, cookies, ice cream and other foods that contain peanut butter. The outbreak has sickened more than 470 people and killed six in 43 states.

Stewart Parnell, president of Peanut Corp, said: "We deeply regret that this product recall has expanded, and our first priority is to protect the health of our customers."
