Widening Income Gap Between Rich and Poor Leading to Increasing Health Gap

A recent study released on Thursday brought out that the income gap in Manitoba is increasing and also, more the wealth people possess more the healthy they are.

The researchers at the University of Manitoba's faculty of medicine conducted the study “Growing Gaps in Wealth and Health for Manitobans”. It was found that in last 20 years, for both the rural and urban communities, the gap in average household incomes has increased by two-folds.

The average income gap between the rich and the poor was above $21,000 in 1986, which surged to $47,000 after twenty years. Winnipeg and Brandon experienced a much wider gap, where average income for a wealthy urban household is $114,000, which is $34,000 for a poor household.

Also, researchers discovered that with the widening gap between the earnings of poor and rich, the heath gap between the respective groups is also increasing. Around 30% of the impoverish people are more threatened to die prematurely and get affected by tuberculosis. Their teen girls are also more prone to get pregnant.

Dr. Patricia Martens, the lead researcher said, "Large gaps in serious health issues demand attention whether they are growing over time or not, and they require appropriate health programs and policies".

No improvement was found by researchers in high school graduation rates for the lower-income group. They possess a mere 50% graduation rate.
