Sen. Hillary Clinton's inaugural day was marred by Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, whose objections put Clinton’s confirmation to be secretary of state on hold, but Senate did give nod to 7 of President Obama's Cabinet-level appointees yesterday.
It came up as first obstacle for Obama, just hours after he was sworn into office. Demanding for more financial info on former president Bill Clinton's charitable foundation, Sen. John Cornyn objected to a unanimous-consent motion to allow the vote, which forced the Senate to hold its approval to Clinton’s appointment.
Looking forward for a debate on the issue, Cornyn said, "I’m pleased to have the opportunity to have a full and open debate and an up-or-down vote on Sen. Clinton’s nomination as secretary of state."
However, the Republican won’t be able to delay approval for long. The Senate is expected to hold a roll-call vote on her nomination today.
The 7 appointments approved by Senate include Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Office of Management and Budget Director Peter R. Orszag, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
