Toshiba unveils 3D TVs that do not require special glasses

With Toshiba having announced two `glasses-less' 3D TVs - the Regza 20GL1 and the Regza 12GL1 - on Sunday night, the demonstration of the sets on Monday, in a dark makeshift theater at the Ceatec electronics show near Tokyo, witnessed quite a crowd.

Toshiba unveiled two high-definition 3D TVs, as well as a 56-inch prototype, during the demonstration. The new 3D TVs models from the company will essentially allow users to watch 3D at home, without the need of the preposterous plastic glasses.

According to the details forwarded by a Toshiba representative at the Ceatec show, the two smaller size models of the TVs will hit the Japanese market in December; while there currently are no plans to make the 56-incher prototype into an actual product.

Elaborating on its 3D technology, Toshiba said that the new TVs use the Cell Broadband Engine which takes a 2D image and simultaneously creates "nine different perspectives" of each of these images from nine different directions, in real time; thereby creating "a three-dimensional impression of the image."

Despite the fact that the demonstration of the 3D TVs at Ceatec lacked cinema-quality experience and underscored the scope for further improvement, most of the people in the audience were impressed by the surprisingly notable 3D effect of the devices, which, as per Toshiba European marketing chief Sascha Lange, marks the "first step into the 3D future in the consumer home cinema market."
