It’s being over one year since Pakistan's Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Bill is waiting to get an approval from the Government.
The bill was passed by the National Assembly on August 4, 2009, but the senate was unable to give green signal to the bill within three months as per the Constitution, causing it to delay further.
In Pakistan, domestic violence is a serious problem and the mere giving a thought to the violence bill is considered to be a major development.
It is worth mentioning that around 80% married women in rural parts of the country are victims of domestic abuse and almost 50% urban women are victims of spousal abuse.
According to the Aurat Foundation, during the period 2008 and 2009, there was a 13% increase in the gender-based violence.
Domestic violence is not limited to developing or under-developed nations, the problem is also prevalent in developed countries like the United States. For example, Georgia comes in 10th place in America, when it comes to fatal domestic violence. In Atlanta, at least one woman lives under the fear of domestic violence every day.
As per the domestic violence experts, recession is one of the major reasons for the increased rate of violence against women.
