OfCom the regulator of telecom services in UK has made a path breaking announcement in the history of telecom service provision in Europe.
It has asked BT, the largest internet service provider in Europe to share its broadband network with its competitors. It will majorly help in strengthening the telecom infrastructure of the country.
According to the new regulation BT would require to open up its telegraph poles and ducts for its rivals like Talk Talk, Virgin Media, BSkyB etc wherein they would be use their own cables. This move would allow these internet service providers to save upon a lot of cost and invest them in turn in superfast broadband service.
Ed Richards, the chief executive of Ofcom said that it was an important decision and would facilitate many operations.
However the pricing strategy would be left on BT for providing the service. BT says it has already been doing so since past few months. Earlier this year Virgin Media had approached BT with similar recommendations but the two companies failed to reach any conclusion. Hence Virgin Media has welcomed this regulation of OfCom and looks forward to fulfill the aim of this decision.
