Senate clears; Clinton sworn in as new secretary of state

The former first lady Hillary Clinton took a big sigh of relief on Wednesday, when the U.S. senate approved her nomination for President Obama's secretary of State.

On Tuesday, Senate withheld approval due to the objections by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), over Bill Clinton’s overseas fundraising activities. Consequently, Clinton could not get conformation vote on Inauguration Day, while six other Cabinet members were approved by the Senate.

However yesterday, Senate cleared Clinton’s name for President Barack Obama’s secretary of state, with overwhelming 94-2 vote. Shortly after the Senate gave its approval, Hillary Clinton was sworn in as the new secretary of state of United States.

Sen. John Cornyn, who had objections on her nomination, stated that he endorsed her nomination, because it was important that she gets to work asap, but “the issue of foreign donations raised crucial questions about government transparency and trust”.
